The Clutter Cycle

You’ve probably heard people say that physical and Mental clutter are inextricably linked.  Well here’s the theory behind that link and why people have clutter that’s out of control.

There are two types of accumulation cycles taking place at the same time when someone has clutter that is out of control and continues to grow.

1.    The Physical clutter Accumulation Cycle.

2.    The Mental clutter Accumulation Cycle.

So how does Clutter Accumulate and get out of Control?

Clutter Accumulates and gets out of control because the Physical clutter cycle that someone may be experiencing has a crucial step missing from it, which in turn contributes to Mental clutter starting to accumulate.

The step that’s missing is a de-clutter step.

Think about your clutter -  when does it get removed from the home?

If you want to clear your clutter and stop it growing before your very eyes then you will need to add in a de-clutter step to what you’re already doing.  There’s no other way that you can create more space or get more organised.

Think about it.

Have you had to replace any furniture or electrical equipment in the past 10-15 years?  If so, what did you do with the old or broken furniture or electrical equipment?  Did you keep it? If so, have you ever done anything with it since?  If you didn’t keep it, imagine that you had. What would the effect on your home and your space have been if you’d kept everything that had become old or broken?

If you keep adding Physical clutter to the cycle above at, lets say, one shopping bag worth a week, after a year you’ll have 52 extra shopping bags of clutter in your home.

If you have the cycle outlined above then you’re not reducing the clutter in your home by the equivalent 52 bags of shopping in that year, so you’re only ever adding to your clutter, never reducing it.

By adding a de-clutter step to the cycle, and as long as you accept that you will need to let go of some of your belongings to make space for the new things that’s are coming into your home, then you’ll always have enough space for your belongings and, more crucially, the space and energy to enjoy and appreciate them.

When we work with someone in their home, On the telephone or in our workshops and courses, we always take some time to look at your Clutter Cycle and see what's missing.

If you have clutter that’s out of control you’re almost certainly missing the de-clutter step in your cycle.

Our eBooks, workbooks, Telephone Coaching and help in your home will help to give you that de-clutter stage, help you get back control and reduce the amount of clutter you have.  The only thing you need to decide is whether that’s something you’d like to learn!  Click on the ‘how to clear your clutter’ tab on the left to find out more.
