Why can’t I control my clutter?
Imagine your home as an airport baggage conveyor belt.
Clutter gets put on the conveyor belt at a certain speed (comes into your home). It then goes round and round the conveyor belt, either coming off the conveyor belt (goes out of your home) or staying on the conveyor belt (stored in your home).
If the clutter continues to be added to the conveyor belt and none of it comes off, the conveyor belt will slow down under the weight and volume of clutter that is on it (stored in your home) and eventually stop.
If clutter continues to be added to the conveyor belt at a greater speed than it is coming off the conveyor belt (going out of your home), then the clutter on the conveyor belt will slowly build up (as you store more in your home) and eventually stop.
If clutter continues to be added even after the conveyor belt has stopped, then the clutter will simply continue to pile up on the conveyor belt (in your home) until there is no space left in your home to put anything, move around, see the light etc.
If your conveyor belt has slowed down or stopped, you may decide to have a 'weekend blitz' on the clutter so that a lot of what's on the conveyor belt goes out of your home.
However, if you don't adjust the speed at which clutter goes on and off the conveyor belt AT THE SAME TIME as clearing the backlog, the clutter will accumulate again because you haven't actually changed what you're doing, you've just dealt with the immediate problem of the conveyor belt not working.
The skill of clearing your clutter and learning to clear and control it in the long term requires you to understand that you need to do 5 things:
- clear the backlog of clutter that’s on the conveyor belt (in your home) so that it can start moving again and create more space on the conveyor belt (your home)
- learn how to control the rate and volume at which clutter is added to the conveyor belt
- learn and accept that the size of your home is reflected in the size of your conveyor belt, therefore not all clutter on the conveyor belt can be kept
- learn to remove clutter from the conveyor belt so that it doesn't build up to a point where it stops
- learn to decide where the clutter that is removed goes.
Ring any bells?
Do you know why your clutter is getting out of control?
The secret to ‘how’ to clear your clutter is to recognise what is happening with respect to your conveyor belt, to acknowledge that you need to do the 5 things listed above and, if necessary, to get the help and learn the skill of how to get your conveyor belt working efficiently again.
If you would like that help then you’ve come to the right place.
We help people with all 5 of the things listed above.
- A home consultation, the eBooks and workbooks all deal with points 1, 3, 4 and 5.
- The 6 weeks of follow up support that you get with a home consultation, and the Telephone Support Service both help with points 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5.
It’s not a matter that you can’t control your clutter, you just need to learn how to do it and how to get your conveyor belt working efficiently rather than trying to fix it each time it stops working. As all doctors say – prevention is better than cure and it’s exactly the same with your clutter!
