The Shame of Clutter
Did you know that there's a lot of shame about having clutter?
That's why we focus on advertising on google, because people can quickly look for help while they're on their computer at work or at home, and without anyone knowing they're looking for help with their clutter.
It's also why:
It's a shame that there's shame attached to clutter, and it's not helping that we don't feel able to talk about it amongst friends and family.
- When someone buys an eBook, hard copy workbook or self help package we use Paypal so that you get an e-mail receipt rather than a paper copy in the post (so no one sees that you've bought them).
- When someone books help in their home we send out the booking form by e-mail, so there's no suspicious post for partners or family to question.
- Our Newsletters go out as a PDF e-mail attachment rather than a hard copy printed version so that again, it's not 'evidence' of having sought help for the clutter.
- When we help someone in their home we turn up no earlier than 10am and aim to leave by 6pm so that children can go to friends after school, partners are usually not home from work by then or can more easily be 'diverted',
- Our one day workshops are 10am - 4pm so that people can attend them after they've taken the kids to school or partners have left home for work, and be back to pick up children from playdates or back home before partners return from work.
- How many times have you sat down for an hour or two with friends and talked about your clutter, how it makes you feel, the effect it has on you and your life?
- In fact, how many times have you sat down in your home with friends talking about your clutter?
Very little if any, I imagine.
That’s because there’s still shame attached to not being able to de-clutter your clutter. For some reason women in particular are assumed to have, or expected to have, this ‘natural’ nest-building and controlling skill. However, as I say to everyone, if we can’t cook then we can get takeaway or ready meals to disguise the fact we can’t cook. If we don’t know how to de-clutter, it’s not so easy to disguise as cleaners only help clean, they can’t sort through or organise your clutter for you.
Having the opportunity to talk about your clutter and how it affects you, talk to someone who understands and talk to other people who have the same problems can be a real relief for people seeking help with their clutter. You only need to have a one hour telephone consultation with Clare, attend one of our one day workshops or FREE clutter clusters to realise how much people with clutter have in common, what a relief it can be to share those experiences and feelings, and in fact, how much laughter you can have about your clutter!
