Clutter Enthusiasts
Clutter Enthusiasts are, perhaps, the most frustrating and confusing of all the clutter characters. Giving an appearance of a Clutter Connoisseur or Clutter Calmer they are in fact a Clutter Chaos in disguise.
Why?
Clutter Enthusiasts have a reason for keeping everything, regardless of whether or not the item is of use to them or they have sufficient space to house it. A clutter enthusiast collects with a passion – rare things, old things, they’ll use every plausible excuse for keeping or buying things.
‘It was on special offer’ – even though it wasn’t on their shopping list.
‘Buying 20 of them instead of 1 saved us £1’ - even though they only use one of them a month, they won’t think about the need to find space to store the 19 that they won’t use immediately.
‘The shop was closing down and they’re the only shop who sells it’ – even though it’s not something you would normally have or use.
‘It could really make life easier’ – even though life wasn’t particularly difficult in the first place.
A Clutter enthusiast will have something of everything, the equivalent of a jack of all trades and master of none. In particular they struggle with:
- Following instructions
- Resisting temptation or a bargain
- Finding the patience to do things slowly but instead prefer to jump straight in – perhaps partly in panic and desire to see a difference quickly.
- Saying no – they will hold on to a lot of things for other people therefore taking on responsibility for keeping things and finding space for things that are not theirs
- Saying no – they will find a reason to keep anything and everything (!)
- Making a decision about whether they want more space or lots of ‘possibly useful thing of great interest’
- Reading things and reading what’s actually there rather than what they think is there
- Listening
- They are interested in the ‘whys’ of things as opposed to the ‘practicalities’ or 'doing' and 'turning into action' of things
- Focusing is something that doesn’t come naturally to them
- They loose interest and focus very quickly
- Doing something differently to the way they've done it in the past is uncomfortable
- They are easily distracted by things that stimulate them, rather than focusing on repeating boring tasks over and over again to achieve results and success
- They live 'in the moment' and rarely plan ahead or turn the plan into action
- Doing one thing at a time
- Accepting advice and implementing it
- Trying something different
- Simplicity
