| Are you a 'normal' Clutterholic? |
According to recent consumer research, 58% of us moan on a weekly basis about our household chores (One Poll, April 2010). However, if you think you can solve your clutter challenge by setting aside a whole day or two, getting more storage, getting a skip, or be ruthlessness with your decision making so you can be clear of your clutter once and for all, think again. Furthermore, if you’re over the age of 40 you’ve got even less chance of being able to focus on doing the decluttering when you finally get down to 'doing the doing'. According to a study by the University of California, the older we get, the harder we find it to ignore distractions in the initial stages of performing a new task.
That’s assuming, of course, that you can even get round to doing the decluttering. According to an article in Scientific American Mind in January 2009, 15 – 20% of adults ‘routinely put off activities that would be better accomplished ASAP, which has resulted in 40% of those adults having experienced a financial loss because of procrastination.'
If you've ever had an unpaid bill, lost a new credit or debit card amongst the clutter, not filed your tax return on time, not paid in a share dividend or cheque because you lost it in the clutter, had to buy more of something because you can't find the one you know you've got 'somewhere' - you'll be able to relate to this.

| Why you need help to clear your clutter... |
Clearly, now more than ever, having a Clutter Free home matters. We can’t afford an average of £35 / US$55 a week to store the equivalent contents of a clutter free one bedroomed flat. We can’t afford to move to a bigger home. We can’t afford to waste what’s in our clutter if we can use it. Most of us can’t afford a minimum of £250 / US$400 (plus expenses) to have someone come to our homes to help us for just one day. But if you are determined to declutter... how do you get started, stay motivated and get to the light at the end of the tunnel?Sure, you'll probably have seen lots of Professional Declutterers who offer services to come to your home to ‘do the doing’ for you. You're going to see a whole lot more of these spring up as long as the industry remains unregulated and, as the market gets tougher, fewer people can afford expensive one off home visits, and more Professional Declutterers succumb to the pressures from the off site self storage companies to 'work with them' on a commission basis. For every client they encourage to put their clutter in storage, they'll pay the Professional Declutterer a commission.
I should know - I get on average one call a week from storage companies wanting to work with me - and who I turn away because I know that off site self storage is NOT a long term solution to the problem of clutter - instead it's a very expensive long term commmitment.
Unfortunately these services won’t provide a lasting change for the clutterholic. I know – I’ve got lots of Success Club members who made that mistake in the past and found the clutter came back. Many decluttering "gurus" are really just "reorganising and storage experts".
Most professional declutterers help only people who are in an absolute panic to deal with the symptom that is the clutter, rather than the symptom AND the cause which is acquiring too much stuff - so convince the client that "more storage” or “let me make the decisions for you” is the solution.
But if you count on them to clear your clutter for you... and they don't use this secret... you'll pay a lot of money for a short term solution that doesn’t put you back in control of your own home.
The truth is... the solution to your clutter crisis is being used by naturally organised people everyday – and they don’t even know it. The person who says they’ll come and do it for you – they’re using it. That person you know who seems to keep an organised, clutter free home effortlessly – they’re using it. It's a skill that you can learn, it’s affordable, it's proven, and it doesn't take a genius to master...
I know - I identified the skill they're using, and applied it to my own Clutter when I had my Clutter Challenge back in 2001.
However hard I tried, however much time I spent trying to declutter, it seemed to grow back before my very eyes - or when I wasn't looking - and follow me round my home. Whenever I cleared one area or surface, it would reappear again. Clearing sufaces, spaces or storage seemed to just act like a clutter magnet, attracting back 'stuff' within hours or days.
- Where was it all coming from?
- Was I a hopeless case?
- Would I ever manage to get it under control or was I wasting my time even trying?
- Why wouldn't it stay away when I spent hours trying to deal with it?
- And why did the TV programmes and decluttering books I had amongst my clutter seem to make no difference to me, my clutter and my home?
- Why was there no one out there who would help me learn how to do it myself, so I could get back control for good, rather than become dependent on someone else to make the decisions for me every time the clutter returned?
I searched for practical help that would turn the TV programmes and endless books on decluttering that I had amongst my clutter (!) into reality. Yet all I could find out there were people who would charge me 1/5 of my monthly salary for one day of help in my home. Even I knew one day of help wouldn’t make much of a difference. I needed help that would last longer than a day, was better value than someone coming to my home and making judgments on my belongings, and taught me how to do it myself so that, if it started to appear again, I could get it back under control quickly, easily and before it grew out of control again. After all, what to them would be a worthless scrap of paper, may be a last letter from a loved one to me. How would they know?
So, unable to find any help that put me back in the driving seat and taught me a skill for life, I set about figuring out what the clutter free and organised people were doing that I wasn’t doing. After all, I’d been clutter free and organised before - indeed, I'd been a PA, Office Manager and Project Manager in my professional career. If my colleagues saw my home, my reputation and credibility at work would have taken a beating. Surely I could figure out the skill I used to have but had somehow lost?
So I spent a year finding out what naturally clutter free people did that I didn’t do. What was the missing link, the lost skill, the secret of success?
After a year of watching, studying, modeling over 100 people, and working with over 25 clutterholics just like me to test the process, I discovered the process that is now the foundation of the way I help people declutter and get organised for good.
Now, when the BBC radio network need an expert to talk about decluttering... they call me!

I was when I had my clutter challenge when the only help available was expensive, help in my home from someone who said they would do it all for me but in reality made judgements on my home, my life and my belongings.

An Assisted Clutter Clearing Session is a 4 hour appointment that you make with me, a time when you will do a Clutter Clearing Session together, so that I can guide you through the process step by step, you can ask questions as you do the Clutter Clearing Session, ask me for advice, help with making the decisions - all the things you need practical, 1-2-1 help with as you are Clearing your Clutter. The first call - made via a landline or skype - is approximately 30 minutes long and I will go throught the preparation and setup for the Clutter Clearing Session. You will then end the call and spend 30 minutes taking the first step in the process, under my guidance. If you need to, you can call me at any time during the 30 minutes if you panic, get confused or just need a question answered. After 30 minutes, you have the second call via a landline or skype, and I ask you a series of check-in questions to deal with any issues or challenges that resulted from your 30 minute Clutter Clearing Session. Once all issues are dealt with, you then do another 30 minutes Clutter Clearing Session, followed by a check-in withme . This cycle of Clutter Clearing Session and Check-in with me continues throughout the 4 hour session to ensure that the Clutter is cleared, decisions made, and issues dealt with.
In the second week .......we will have your first 4 hour Assisted Clutter Clearing Session where I talk you through the process of how to declutter using our method, and deal with your questions and queries as they arise.

You just don't know about them because, like you, they're not sharing it with friends, family or colleagues and, if friends and family do know, then we're often labelled as 'the cluttered one'. When you click on this link you'll be able to listen to the seminar on-line (as long as your computer has speakers). You can play, pause and rewind as much and whenever you want or need to. You will be able to listen to the seminar on-line for as long as you keep the e-mail with the link in it. It would be impossible to try and get 100 people to be available at the same time every week! If you're not comfortable listening to the seminar online then you don't need to worry - an audio CD version of it, that you can listen to on your CD player at home, will be on it's way in the post to you every Monday. Therefore, if you prefer to listen to a CD in your CD player, you'll also be able to listen to the seminar when it comes through your letterbox. |
