As you may already know, Compulsive Hoarding is set to be recognised as a disorder when it is listed in the 2012 edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. As a consequence of the growing awareness of this, and as 2012 approaches, I am receiving weekly requests for my knowledge and 9 years full time experience of dealing with people who have this issue. These requests are as diverse as therapists who have clients with clutter, estate agents who have vendors with excessive clutter that is preventing a house sale, to TV production companies wanting to find out more for a new TV series.
This increase would suggest that, at last, it is not only getting the recognition it deserves, it is also becoming a much more talked about issue. This will hopefully mean that people currently suffering in silence will, next year, become more aware of the help and understanding that is available for them thanks to the increased publicity that it will inevitably receive.
For those of us who work with compulsive hoarders on a daily basis (and have done for the past 9 years), these requests for our knowledge and experience are welcome, yet difficult to service. Naturally, due to demands on time and working on a full time basis with people who have clutter, it’s not possible for me to give each and every request individual time and attention. I have therefore introduced a two day training and awareness course for anyone who has been, is currently, or is likely to be in contact with people who suffer from compulsive hoarding – or as we call it, excessive Clutter - so that you can understand the issues that someone with excessive clutter / Compulsive Hoarding has in greater detail.
Whether you have a personal or professional interest in knowing more about people with clutter or you have clients who would benefit from you having a greater understanding of their clutter issues, then this 2 day introductory course will provide you with useful, practical knowledge that you will then be able to use and apply in whatever way you feel appropriate.
If you are interested in learning more about the issue of clutter, then you'll be interested in the Clutter Comptence training detailed below that I provide.

Clutter Competence
Many people don't realise that dealing with clutter isn't simply about getting rid of things and being ruthless. When someone has clutter that is out of control, the physical clutter is merely a physical representation of other 'clutter' that is going on in their personal, emotional, professional or financial lives. In general, the more physical clutter someone has, the more confusion and lack of clarity in their personal, emotional, professional or financial lives. In addition, the amount of resistence to clearing it -making time, making decisions, being realistic - is usually proportional to the amount of resistence and fear to change. The fear of the future, the unknown or forgetting the past. For many, dealing with their visible physical clutter is the first step on a long, and often challenging journey that involves dealing with their past, their present and their future. The perception of many that Clearing Clutter can be done quickly and easily is false. It's neither as simple as a a clear-out or as straightforward as deciding what to keep and what not to keep. This course will enable you to understand some of the issues involved when dealing with people with clutter. ![]() Clare Baker
