Clutter Clearing Concept – Modelling Success
Clutter Clearing Concept – Modelling Success
THE JOHARI WINDOW
The Johari Window is a tool designed to help us understand our relationships with ourselves and others.
Developed by psychologists Joseph Luft and Harrington Ingham in 1955, the model is a simple yet powerful concept for self-awareness and interpersonal communication. The concept has four quadrants, each of which represent a different aspect of self-awareness.
- The Open Self
The open self contains information about us that is known both to us and to others. This includes behaviours, attitudes, skills, and feelings that we openly share and communicate. Increased self-awareness and mutual understanding can be achieved by expanding this quadrant through open and honest communication.
- The Blind Self
The blind self, or “blind spot,” contains information about us that is known to others but not to us. This may include unconscious habits, body language, or certain traits other people observe that we are unaware of. Feedback from others is essential to reduce this blind spot, allowing for greater self-awareness and personal growth.
- The Hidden Self
The hidden self includes information that we know about ourselves but keep hidden from others. This can include fears, secrets, and private experiences that we don’t share due to the fear of feeling vulnerable or judged. In the example of dealing with our clutter challenge, we can reduce this area by sharing our experiences and challenges with other people who also hide their struggle with their clutter from friends or family. These are people who we can share our experiences and challenges with openly and honestly.
- The Unknown Self
The unknown self contains aspects of us that are unknown both to us and to others. This can include bias, gremlins, past childhood trauma, latent abilities, and as yet undiscovered potential. We can reduce this quadrant through understanding on our Journey and with the help of a therapist or counsellor.
