10 Things to Consider with Clothes Clutter

10 Things to Consider with Clothes Clutter

10 THINGS TO

WITH CLOTHES CLUTTER

  1. If you know you haven’t worn something in the last 3 years, are you REALISTICALLY going to wear it in the next 3 years? Don’t kid yourself that you’ll wear it ‘when’ you’ve cleared your clutter. You’ve survived 3 years without wearing it, you will probably survive if you let it go
  2. The best investment you can ever make is having your colours and image assessed. Have it as a peak / Step end reward (have it done again if you’ve had it done in the past), to find out what styles and colours flatters you most. It will help you make balanced, realistic decisions about your clothes clutter, and help you let go of clothes that aren’t in your most flattering colours or styles
  3. Let go of any clothes that don’t fit. Stop trying to convince yourself that you’ll fit back into the clothes that are too small, or that you need the bigger clothes ‘just in case’. It’s been scientifically proven that when people let go of clothes that don’t fit, which involves you having to accept the size you are right now, you will successfully reach your goal quicker and more easily
  4. Take photos of clothes that are sentimental but that you don’t wear so you can trigger the positive memories and feelings in the future, then let go of the item
  5. Just because an item of clothing cost you a lot of money doesn’t mean it has value to you. If you’re not wearing something regularly (at least 7 times in the season it’s designed for), it doesn’t matter if it cost £/$5 or £/$5,000. If you’re not wearing it regularly you’re wasting it by not wearing it. Let it go
  6. If you have clothes that trigger negative memories, ask yourself: why are you keeping them? That wedding dress that ended in divorce, that t-shirt that belonged to the boyfriend you loved but who left you, the ‘goal’ outfit you’ve never been able to wear and makes you feel like a failure
  7. If you had clothes that you haven’t worn at least 7 times in the last year it’s time to get real. You’re unlikely to ever wear them and you’re wasting them if you don’t wear them regularly. Let them go to someone who will wear them. You can replace them if you NEED them in the future
  8. Find out how often you actually wear each and every item of clothing. Track how many times you wear every item over the next 12 months. If you don’t wear it more than 7 times, realistically you don’t NEED it and can let it go. If you have FEWER clothes you will wear them MORE often
  9. Create a list of what you NEED for a capsule wardrobe for YOUR life. If you don’t go to formal functions, you don’t NEED formal evening wear. If you don’t go to a gym, you don’t NEED sportwear. Work backwards from what you USE to help decide what you NEED in your wardrobe
  10. Once you have done all of the above, simply ask each and every item – will I REALISTICALLY wear it when I’m living my Best Life? Will it represent who I am when I am living my Best Life?
