Clutter Focus – Christmas Clutter
Clutter Focus – Christmas Clutter
If we’re not careful, the unwanted Christmas gifts can quickly turn into Clutter magnets because we feel we ‘should’ keep them, even though we don’t use them.
To prevent yourself from accumulating any new clutter this Christmas, why not tell everyone in your home and family about the Thanksgiving Elf who can teach us the importance of letting go of things that we don’t need and don’t use.
The story of the Thanksgiving Elf….
…..to tell your children / grandchildren / partner (!) goes like this:
On Thanksgiving Eve, the night before Thanksgiving, Santa sends his Thanksgiving Elves to collect children’s, parents and grandparents unused and unwanted toys so that he can give them to children and adults around the world, who aren’t as lucky as we are, on Christmas Eve.
On the eve of Thanksgiving, children, parents and grandparents collect unwanted or unused toys into bags, write a list of what they want for Christmas, pop the list in one of the bags, and then leave the bags by the front door for Santa’s Thanksgiving Elves to come and collect the bags during the night, while they sleep.
Santa’s Thanksgiving Elves don’t have the magic powers to be able to come down a chimney or magically appear like Santa, that’s why we put the bags by the front door. In return for every toy or every item that the children / parent / grandchildren leave out for Santa’s Thanksgiving Elves, Santa promises to replace each one with a new one from your list, and he will deliver them when he comes on Christmas Eve.
The Elf on the Shelf comes on Thanksgiving Eve with the Thanksgiving Elves and stays until Christmas Eve to make sure that the children / parents / grandparents are on the nice list and deserve the new toys. If they mis-behave, the Elf on the Shelf tells Santa each time, and each time Santa takes away 1 new toy.
N.B: The parents / grandparents take the bags to the charity shop to be sold before Christmas to people who might not be able to afford to buy new toys for their children. The parents / grandparents can then use the lists they all write to buy what everyone wants.
The story of the Thanksgiving Elf will teach children, parents and grandparents many things, including:
- It’s OK to let go of old toys because it makes space for the new toys
- Patience – you have to wait a month for new toys
- If parents / grandparents take part and also leave out unwanted and unused ‘toys’, they are able to teach children by example that letting go is OK
- Parents / grandparents can teach children how to capture the memories of toys without having to keep the physical thing e.g. taking photos or videos of children playing with their toys before they go
- Letting go of things helps other people.
