Common Characteristics of a Clutter Clearer – A Fear that the Clutter Will Grow Back

When you’re clearing your clutter the Clutter Clearing way, you’re not just clearing it, you’re clearing it so it never grows back.

It’s understandable that we have a fear that it will grow back. We’ve never cleared all our clutter before, and we’ve never been able to keep any space that we have made in the past clear for very long – the clutter has always grown back. To overcome that fear you need to do 2 things:

1. Understand the Fear

Use your emotions wheel to reduce the intensity of that fear and focus your brain on identifying:

  • what type of fear it is
  • what the secondary and less intense emotion is that is driving that fear
  • what the trigger is for that fear.

2. Review your Actions

Check that you’re doing all the basics to manage your Clutter Conveyor Belt to ensure the clutter doesn’t grow back, namely:

  • Your weekly shopping challenge and meal planning to make sure you are only accumulating what you NEED and will USE
  • Your daily paperwork inbox check-in, making sure you are letting go of junk mail when you do the check-in
  • Your daily e-mail check-in
  • Updating your stocklist before you do your weekly meal planning so that things are coming OFF your Conveyor Belt
  • Your weekly planner every week so you are doing an  E-mail Clutter Clearing Session regularly
  • Your weekly planner every week so you are doing a Paperwork Clutter Clearing Session regularly
  • Your weekly planner every week so you are doing a Backlog Clutter Clearing Session regularly
  • Your daily visual check-in
  • Your weekly planner every week so you are getting things off your conveyor belt regularly with your Clutter Clearing Sessions
  • You are making balanced, realistic decisions based on your Worksheet 7’s and Best Life
  • You are taking photos of the areas and rooms you are working on every Clutter Clearing Week so you can reassure yourself that the clutter isn’t growing back
  • Make sure you are making balanced, realistic decisions using all your Decision Making Tools. Make time on your Weekly Planner to review your notes from Step 3 so you know how to use your decision making Tools correctly during your Sessions.
  • You are getting the things you decide to let go of OFF your Clutter Conveyor Belt every week e.g. doing the shredding and putting it out for recycling kerbside collection, taking things to the charity/thrift store.

All of the above are specific ACTIONS that help ensure the clutter doesn’t grow back. If you notice that the clutter IS growing back, work out which of these actions you are not doing.
