10 THINGS TO CONSIDER WITH BOOK CLUTTER
- How many books have you bought multiple times – hard copy and/or digitally – because you think you ‘should’ or ‘want’ to read them, but forget you already have it or can’t find the one you’ve already got? Start by check you haven’t got multiple copies, and let go of any that you do
- What emotion on the emotions wheel do the books trigger? Ask yourself how else you can get that emotion if you let go of the book. E.g. do they make you feel successful, confident, curious, creative, inspired? How might you be able to trigger those feelings in your Best Life?
- Ask yourself how many times you’ve read them, and therefore whether you’re realistically going to read them again. If you let go of them, you can pass on the joy to someone else who can enjoy them as much as you did the first time YOU read it
- Is reading a genuine hobby of yours, or something you WANT to do? Is it part of your Best Life? Do you put a block of time on your weekly planner every week to read? If not then it’s time to let go
- Consider having an ‘Annual Must Read’ list of books you commit to reading once a year, or join a book club so you can make time to read, and share the joy with others
- Go digital with your favourite books so they don’t take up physical space, and so you can access them quickly and easily
- If a book triggers positive memories, and you know you won’t realistically read it again, take photos of it so you can create a photobook of favourite books. The photos will trigger the feelings and memories, without you having to keep all the books
- If they are books from when you were studying or resources for your profession, consider donating to a relevant library e.g. teachers resource library – although be aware, these are predominately online digital libraries. I once had a judge who inherited a full library of specialist law books going back 100 years. He couldn’t find anyone to donate them to due to everything being digital, so there was no option but to let them go to recycling
- For text books you decide to let go of, search online to see if you can donate them to overseas charities that send them abroad
- For literature books, consider passing them on to a fellow book lover online e.g. https://www.bookcrossing.com/about
