Common Characteristics of a Clutter Clearer – We Procrastinate

If you’re saying ‘no’ you’re in denial! I often procrastinate with starting my morning exercise routine, even though I know that it helps me wake up, feel more toned and have a more productive and focused day. We’re all human after all… and we all procrastinate at some point even though we know it’s a form of self-sabotage to achieving our life goals.

Contrary to belief, procrastination isn’t just a time management or planning issue which is why the weekly planner that we do on our Journey won’t stop you procrastinating because it doesn’t make you take action. As Dr. Ferrari is quoted as saying’

Rather than avoiding action, many procrastinators are over-optimistic about how long things take to do.

The antidote to procrastination is accountability. The more of the 10 causes of procrastination (listed on the right) that apply to you, the more accountability you will need to overcome your procrastination on your Journey, because your procrastination is a long-term habit and part of your comfort zone, and your old habits of thinking and doing will take longer to break.

  1. Childhood. If you grew up with authoritarian parents (harsh, controlling) you are less likely to be able to regulate your emotions. It can also be a form of rebellion that we take into adulthood
  2. Learned Helplessness. Our friends may become enablers to our procrastination when they accept our excuses for not ‘doing the doing’
  3. We are In-Time Temporal discounting means we are thrill-seekers who want instant hits of dopamine that our long-term goals don’t give us
  4. Perfectionism. You think you have to do it perfectly first time, or can do it more perfectly if you wait until you have more time
  5. Fear – of failure, criticism, success
  6. Lack of motivation – to get started, because you not clear what difference it’s going to make to you, or because you expect to fail – again
  7. Overwhelm – you don’t know where / how to start
  8. Stress / anxiety – procrastinating is your coping mechanism for dealing with stress
  9. Impatience / Unrealistic Expecations – you think you have to do it perfectly all one one go
  10. Unclear Goal You’re not clear about how you want your Clutter Free Best Life to be.
