Common Characteristics of a Clutter Clearer – Self Sabotage
Common Characteristics of a Clutter Clearer – Self Sabotage
Self-sabotage is a common behaviour that can significantly affect our ability to make progress on our Journey and prevent ourselves from getting – and staying – stuck.
Recognising the signs that we are self-sabotaging, and understanding the root causes of it is crucial in overcoming it so that we can ask for the help we need. Here are 3 common causes of self-sabotage.
1. Low Self-Esteem
Low self-esteem can control our actions and decisions. If we struggle with low self-esteem, we often have negative perceptions of ourselves, doubting our abilities and worth. This lack of self-belief can cause us to self-sabotage by procrastinating or asking for the help we need when we get stuck because we don’t feel we deserve to succeed.
2. Fear of Failure
The fear of failure can be so overwhelming that we prefer to remain in our comfort zone rather than risk trying something new in the uncomfortable learning and change zone. The possibility of failure can trigger feelings of shame, embarrassment, or disappointment, which the perfectionist inside us has worked hard to avoid at all costs.
3. Fear of Success
Ironically, the fear of success can be just as debilitating as the fear of failure. Success brings change, and with change comes uncertainty. Many people find the possibility of success intimidating because it involves stepping into the learning and change zone, which is unfamiliar territory, requires new responsibilities, and where they may feel expectations are higher. We might also believe that we don’t deserve success or that it will ultimately lead to negative consequences, such as jealousy from others, the loss of personal relationships or regret we didn’t do this sooner.
Overcoming Self-Sabotage
Here are 3 steps to help overcome self-sabotage:
1. Cultivate Self-Awareness
Developing self-awareness involves paying attention to your thoughts, emotions, and behaviours. By identifying your patterns of self-sabotage, you can begin to understand the underlying beliefs and fears that are driving your actions. Journaling, mindfulness, and speaking with a therapist can help in this process.
2. Challenge Limiting Beliefs
Once you’ve identified the beliefs that contribute to self-sabotage, challenge them. Use your tracking tools to establish the facts and then ask yourself if these beliefs are based on facts or assumptions. Replace negative self-talk with your Best Life Script, focus on your strengths and past successes, and ask for help.
3. Set Realistic Goals
Set achievable goals and get into a routine to help build confidence and reduce the fear of failure. Simply focus on watching and following ONE Journey video a day, 5 days a week. Track your progress and capture every new Journey video watched and followed as a success in your Success Gratitude Journal.
